How does a religious christian justify their their tolerance of other religious beliefs in today's world?

growing up i learned that christian doctrine is a fundamentalist doctrine. and it must be so, presumably, if the ultimate goal of christianity is to make the whole world christian. but i love humanity, and it is hard to believe that everyone must "do as i do".
